In Coaxing Cooperation From GOP, Reid Quotes Reagan

In seeking new cooperation from Republicans to enact the initiatives President Obama outlined Tuesday in his State of the Union address, the Senate’s top Democrat quoted the late GOP hero, President Ronald Reagan. With the dawn of Obama’s second term, Republicans have a “second chance to work with Democrats to rebuild the middle class,” Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid says. “Republicans say they agree the deep cuts they voted for would be damaging to our economy and to national security. But they would rather cut Medicare, education and medical research than close a single wasteful tax loophole or ask a single millionaire to contribute more,” Reid says of the budget cuts the GOP helped enact known as the “sequester.” “They … Continue reading

Poor Reception Opens Opportunity For Dems

Americans don’t really like what they see in Rep. Paul Ryan as the new GOP vice-presidential candidate, and that gives President Obama and other Democrats an important chance to define the Minnesota Republican in the eyes of voters. A new Gallup poll finds just 39 percent who think Ryan is an “excellent” or “pretty good” vice presidential choice. In the USA Today story about the poll, even a Romney pollster admits Ryan is not well-known among Americans. That lack of identity provides Democrats a perfect opportunity to paint a negative picture of Ryan, the powerful chairman of the House Budget Committee best-known for a deeply conservative federal budget proposal which would essentially privatize Medicare. That’s just what Democrats and their allies are … Continue reading

OBAMA VIDEO: Get To Know Paul Ryan

President Obama’s re-election team continues to try to get out in front of Saturday’s selection of Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin as Republican Mitt Romney’s vice-presidential running mate. The Obama campaign is already out with a new Web video titled “Get to know Paul Ryan,” and features aspects of the House Budget Committee chairman’s deeply conservative “Ryan budget.” The video shows clips of a number of TV pundits analyzing — and criticizing — various parts of the Ryan budget. It also shows clip after clip of Romney endorsing the Ryan proposals. “In Ryan, Romney has selected a running mate best known for designing the extreme GOP budget that would end Medicare as we know it, and — just like Romney’s … Continue reading

Protests Planned As Anger Against Supercommittee Rises

A prominent Washington progressive organization plans national protests next week against further cuts to federal safety net programs like Social Security and Medicare. Among those speaking out against any such cuts by the so-called supercommittee is former senator Russ Feingold. MoveOn.org is organizing what it calls national demonstrations on Nov. 17, ahead of the release of recommendations to cut the federal budget deficit by the bipartisan supercommittee. “The past months have been filled with powerful, creative, and passionate displays of people fighting back against a system rigged against them,” says an email sent by Monday by MoveOn.org. “But many of our elected officials continue to sit on the sidelines—or worse, to look out only for millionaires and powerful industries. Until … Continue reading
