No Safe Haven for Obstructionists

by Walter Brasch   Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), the Senate minority leader, is not a happy man. He didn’t like it when Barack Obama was elected president. Just about the first thing McConnell said was that his main responsibility was to make sure Mr. Obama was a one-term president. That vow drove McConnell’s and the Tea Party’s politics. They didn’t worry about the nation or the people. They worried about how to make Barack Obama a one-term president. They failed. But, in the past six years, McConnell managed to block almost all constructive legislation in the Senate.  And it’s not even a fair fight. McConnell manipulated and wheeled and dealed so that the majority no longer can do anything. … Continue reading

NRA Liars and Congressional Cowards

by Walter Brasch   President Obama cast off his “No Drama Obama” garb, and became the fiery leader of hope and change that Americans first elected in 2008. At a speech in Hartford, Conn., the President, frustrated by Republican obstructionism, demanded of his audience, “If you believe that the families of Newtown and Aurora and Tucson and Virginia Tech and the thousands of Americans who have been gunned down in the last four months deserve a vote, we all have to stand up.” He demand, “If you want the people you send to Washington to have just an iota of the courage that the educators at Sandy Hook showed when danger arrived on their doorstep, then we’re all … Continue reading

Mitch McConnell’s ‘Whack-a-Mole’ Dirty Politics Campaign

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) was mad. Not the kind of mad you get when your favorite team blows a big lead and loses its eighth straight game, but Red-Faced-Exploding-Blood-Pressure Mad. This is what you get from the political Left in America,” McConnell bellowed to the media. “That is what the political Left does these days.” McConnell’s campaign manager, Jesse Benton, added his opinion—“We’ve always said the Left would stop at nothing to attack Sen. McConnell.” They demanded the FBI launch a criminal investigation. The FBI response to the media was, “[W]e are looking into the matter.” Not long after, McConnell approved a campaign slogan, exhorting voters to “Stand with McConnell against the liberal media’s illegal and underhanded tactics.” … Continue reading

Reid: ‘McConnell Took Obstruction to New Heights by Filibustering His Own Bill’

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and other Democrats were left to marvel Thursday as Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell ended up filibustering his own legislation to raise the federal debt ceiling in order to prevent its passage. Although McConnell apparently brought up the bill thinking it would not attract Democratic support, Democrats called his bluff and the Kentucky Republican was forced to filibuster it — apparently marking the first time in U.S. history a senator blocked his own bill, according to Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.). “The Senate should pass Senator McConnell’s proposal to give the President the authority to avoid the knock-down, drag-out fight we had over the debt ceiling last year – a fight that caused the first-ever downgrade … Continue reading

Senate Democrats To Put GOP On The Spot With Tax Cut

Senate Republicans who have been intensely devoted to tax cuts may find themselves this week on record in support of a big tax hike on the middle class. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid announced Monday plans to consider a bill to extend President Obama’s payroll tax cut which benefits 160 million American workers. Without an extension, those tax breaks will expire at the end of the year, however. Sen. Bob Casey’s legislation not only would continue the existing 2-percent payroll tax cut for employees into next year, it would boost it to a 3.1-percent break. The legislation would also cut in half (from 6.2 percent to 3.1 percent) the employer-side Social Security payroll taxes, Democrats say. Democrats also are quick … Continue reading
