White House Announces Two New Executive Actions on Guns

With gun control legislation going no where in Congress, President Obama took action today with two executive actions aimed towards gun control. The two actions came “along with the morning swearing-in of Todd Jones, the director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives,” and they ”mark a fresh move to spotlight presidential efforts to fight gun violence in the face of congressional inaction.” The ATF, will now require background checks for all guns that would be registered to a corporation or a trust, the White House said. Obama Launches Gun-Violence Task Force

At a press conference this morning President Obama said “he would make gun control a “central issue” as he opens a second term” and he announced the formation of a special task force on gun violence, to be headed by Vice President Joe Biden. Obama’s announcement came as  “House Republicans restated their firm opposition to enacting any new limits on firearms or ammunition, setting up the possibility of a philosophical clash over the Second Amendment early in Mr. Obama’s second term.” President Obama noted that the task force ”will formulate a package of policy recommendations by January.” The announcement came five days after the deadliest elementary school shooting in American history. “The fact that this problem is complex can no longer be an excuse … Continue reading

Its fate may be in the hands of the Supreme Court come Monday, but on Friday Democrats were not shy about defending the landmark 2010 healthcare reform law on the second anniversary of its enactment. Romney’s Charge That ‘Any President’ Would Have Killed bin Laden False, Former White House Adviser Says

A former White House adviser during the Clinton administration is striking back at Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney’s assertion that “any president would have done” the operation President Obama ordered last year which resulted in the death of terrorist mastermind Osama bin Laden. The former Massachusetts governor last month argued: “With regards to Osama bin Laden, we’re delighted that [Obama] gave the order to take out Osama bin Laden, any president would have done that.
