Democrats Pull Ahead In Congressional Vote

For the first time since the 2010 election, Democrats have taken the lead in the congressional vote and this poll shows that third-party defections on the presidential ballot could prove devastating for the Republicans, according to a new poll out Friday. Moreover, the intensity gap has shifted in the Democrats’ favor and Democrats have moved to parity on the economy after 28 months in deficit, the Democracy Corps poll finds. More than half of all voters (53 percent) say...

Making Sport of Our Future

by WALTER BRASCH             One of the fun things sports writers do is try to predict the winners and scores of upcoming games, from high school through the pros. For special “look-at-us-we’re important” bonus points, they create lists of “Top” teams and rank them, both pre-season and weekly. Sports writers have some kind of genetic mutation that leads them to believe they know more about sports than the average schlump who spends almost $200 a year for a...

Calling them “callous,” a prominent labor leader denounced House Republicans for their approach to extending unemployment benefits to jobless Americans. The GOP-led House voted Tuesday to extend emergency unemployment insurance beyond the end of the year for Americans, but only after also cutting and restricting the benefits. “It’s bad enough that Republicans blocked bills to create jobs, but now they cut unemployment benefits for people who can’t find work,” says Jim Hoffa, general president of the Teamsters labor union....

That’s just what’s happening now as environmental groups and others have begun to push back against Republicans who once again want to add so-called policy “riders” onto pending budget bills. Lawmakers still must approve legislation to approve spending for most of...

by Rosemary and Walter Brasch In a few days, millions of children will put on costumes, go door to door, and shout “trick or treat.” By Nov. 1, it’ll be over. But, it won’t be over for Americans who will face presidential candidates for the next year. The candidates will continue to try to mask their true selves, while luring us with treats that disguise tricks. Let’s see what each of the candidates might be wearing for the coming...

Drinks Are on the House (and Senate)

“Got any idea how to make a frozen daiquiri?” Saturday. 6 a.m. A question no one else would have asked at that hour. I knew it had to be Marshbaum, my faux-friend foil. “Too early to be drinking,” I mumbled, then hung up. The phone rang again. “It’s not for me,” said Marshbaum, but since I’m going to own a bar, I should learn how to make drinks.” “Marshbaum,” I said, reluctantly awake, “you can’t even afford to buy...
