On Monday, His Holiness, the Dalai Lama “was formally installed as a professor” at Emory University, as ”Tibetan monks wearing moon-shaped yellow hats chanted and played cymbals, gongs and horns.” The occassion was marked with a gift of a “faculty ID card,” although the Dalai Lama’s face is “recognized around the world.”

Today, defying protests from the Chinese government, the United States “conferred its highest civilian honor on the Dalai Lama, the exiled spiritual leader of Tibet, and urged China to meet with him in Beijing to resolve their differences over his demands for autonomy for his mountainous homeland.”

His High Holiness, the Dalai Lama will be in Washington, D.C. next week to receive the United States’ highest civilian honor, the Congressional Gold Medal.
